Lila Downs

With a Mixtec [indigenous Mexican] mother and an American father with Scottish roots, Lila Downs has always drawn on myriad cultural influences without ever losing her identity. Having sung with Mariachi bands and studied opera, she released her debut album ‘Tree Of Life’ which reflected her indigenous Mexican roots. ‘La Linea’ followed, a critique of the US political onslaught on Mexican immigration. In 2002, she won a Latin Grammy for ‘Un Sangre’ which addressed the life of indigenous Mexicans. Her fourth album ‘La Cantina’ marked a return to the ranchera sounds [urban Mexican music] which had soundtracked her childhood. On ‘Shake Away’, released in 2008, she mixes her Latin roots with pop-folk influences, evoking, with feeling and humour, the themes closest to her heart – justice and immigration.
